Lev Girshevich Magazanik

Magazanik Lev Girshevich (1931) fihished the 1sh Leningrad Medical Institute in 1955. After 2 years of the medical practice in Karelia he entered (1957) position of a senior research assistant at the I.M. Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology (Now IEPhB RAS) where he continues to work as a chief researcher. In 1960 he defended his Ph.D. thesis, and in 1970 - his doctoral thesis. For more than 40 years he chaired the Laboratory of the Biophysics of Synaptic Processes. Since 1996 holds a position of a tenured professor at the Department of Physiology of Medical Faculty of Saint-Petersburg State University. In 1997 Lev Girshevich was elected associate member, and in 2016 - full member of the RAS. He is a chief editof of the Russian Journal of Physiology of the RAS and a member of the editorial teams of two other RAS journals and three foreign journals. Lev Girshevich recieved several prestigious awards: The USSR State award (1989), The RAS and Chekh AS award (1975), the I.P. Pavlov SPbSC RAS award (2006) and the L.A. Orbeli award (2016). Authored more than 300 widely cited scientific articles in Russian and foreign journals. The apprentices he fostered are successful heads of the scientific laboratories in Russia and around the globe. The main works of L.G. Magazanik are devoted to the study of the molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission, they serve as a foundation for the development of new pharmaceuticals and new approach to the study of the molecular evolution of nervous system.
